Story by Alexis Henson

Tis the season for illness and the ‘Germbusters’ committee is fighting back.

‘Germbusters’ committee members are Rilee Bowden, Davis Toliver, Brady Greenwood, Abby Allen, Kinsey Watkins, Karley Owens and Alexis Henson. Sponsor is Karyn Jones. Students volunteer every Tuesday during enrichment to clean up the school in zones.

The school is divided into zones and students on the committee group together and clean the individual zones. Members also make weekly announcements and give out prizes to people who get their names drawn in the weekly drawing.

This project came about after school was closed for two days last school year because attendance levels were so low due to the flu and pneumonia. Student Council decided to clean up the school. Last school year we only cleaned one time after we came back from break and we needed to clean more.

Committee members spoke in front of the funding board to secure the grant needed to move forward.

“I spoke in front of the board and asked for funding, Henson said. The committee was awarded $500 for supplies and we have used that money for cleaning supplies such as wipes, sprays, gloves, and even hand sanitizer. Our school is a lot cleaner and people are more aware of washing their hands and not sharing germs.”

So the next time you see a member wiping down a handrail or doorknob make sure to thank them because they are preventing students from getting sick.
