Wendi Gibbs, Content Mastery teacher, competed in the Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon this past Sunday in Las Vegas, Nevada . Although, this is Gibbs first time to compete in Las Vegas, the event has has been running for 50 years.

“I ran in high school and always loved it,” Gibbs said. “I started training for a half marathon around 14 years ago, but I have focused on it more the past five years.”

This was Gibbs’ 10th half-marathon, but it was her first trip to run at night on the Las Vegas strip. The course route was along the strip and in parts of the Las Vegas Valley.

“I’ve never been to Vegas,” Gibbs said. “It was exciting to visit the city and run the strip at night.”

Gibbs has trained differently for this event. She usually trains solo or indoors in a fitness center, but her approach has been varied this time.

“I ran the marathon with four other ladies, Gibbs said. “We have been training and meet in Longview on Tuesdays and Thursdays.”

Running with a group prepared her for her largest half-marathon to date. Roughly 90 percent of the runners who are participating come from outside of Nevada, and almost 50 percent of participants will run their first Rock ‘n’ Roll marathon.

“It’s was the biggest event I’ve been to with 45,000 people,” Gibbs said.
